TEACHINGS WITH LING RINPOCHE
The Joy of Taking Refuge in the Buddhist Path
Dates: from 20 to 21 July. Event onsite and partially live online.
We are delighted to announce that His Eminence Ling Choktrul Rinpoche—a young and eminent master in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition—will be returning to Lerab Ling.
On this occasion, Ling Rinpoche will teach on the entranceway to the Buddhist path, conduct the traditional Refuge ceremony and grant Lay Vows to those who wish to take them. It is exceptional to receive these vows from such an eminent teacher of the monastic tradition.
Entering and travelling on the Buddhist path traditionally begins with a series of deeply empowering contemplations on:
- the uniqueness of our human potential,
- the ever-presence of impermanence and death,
- the infallibility of the cause and effect of our actions, and
- the vicious cycle of frustration and suffering that Buddhists call samsara.
These reflections can inspire a profound desire to liberate ourselves from the conditions that plague our existence with all kinds of sufferings.
We will explore together how the wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings can help us practically, to gradually free ourselves from this situation and awaken to a natural inner peace which is accessible at all times and everywhere.
REFUGE & LAY VOWS CEREMONY (ONLY IN PERSON)
Ling Rinpoche will be granting the Refuge Vow and Lay Vows to those who wish to take them for the first time or to renew them.
On the basis of taking Refuge, it is possible to take one or several of the lay vows. The five lay vows are the basic vows that underpin the Buddhist way of life for lay practitioners. They are the vows to refrain from killing, taking what is not given, lying, sexual misconduct and taking intoxicants.
HOW TO FOLLOW
- To benefit fully from the presence of Ling Rinpoche, we encourage everyone to follow the retreat in person in Lerab Ling. Nevertheless, for those who are unable to attend in person, it is possible to follow the teachings live online (all Saturday and Sunday morning). However, since the Refuge and Lay Vows ceremony (Sunday afternoon) requires your physical presence, it will not be shared online.
- H.E. Ling Rinpoche requests those attending his teachings online establish a proper motivation and participate in the teachings as if in person, without engaging in other activities during the sessions.
- If you wish to deepen the topics of this event with Ling Rinpoche, you could also join the retreat that is “attached” to this weekend: The Way of the Great Perfection (13-21 July).

H.E. LING CHOKTRUL RINPOCHE
His Eminence the 7th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche was born in India in 1985. He was taken to the Tibetan Children's Village in Dharamsala, after his mother died, and stayed there until His Holiness the Dalai Lama recognized him as the reincarnation of his Principal Teacher, H.H. the 6th Kyabjé Yongzin Ling Rinpoche, who passed away in 1983.
The 7th Yongzin Ling Rinpoche entered Drepung Monastic University in South India in 1990 when he was five years old and began his monastic studies there at the age of ten. Rinpoche received his Geshe degree in November 2016 and enrolled at Gyuto Tantric College in Dharamsala, India in April 2017 for a year of tantric studies that traditionally follows the completion of a Geshe degree. He completed his studies in February 2018. During his studies, the 7th Yongzin Ling Rinpoche spent periods of time in retreat.
In 1991 Ling Rinpoche gave his first teaching in South Korea. Since then he has given teachings and tantric initiations in many countries in Asia and Europe, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Mongolia, and Russia as well as Tibetan settlements throughout India and Nepal and Himalayan regions including Ladakh and Mon Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh). Rinpoche has also organized and attended many important Buddhist events.
Starting in 2004, H.E. Ling Rinpoche also participated in the Mind and Life Institute dialogues held in India between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and scientists on a variety of topics, such as physics, neuroplasticity and destructive emotions.
